100% Pure · Undiluted · Single Origin · Japan · 10ml

Steam-distilled from Chamaecyparis obtusa grown in Japan — dry, woody, and quietly lemon-tinged. One botanical, one origin, nothing added.

What "hinoki" actually means

Hinoki (檜) is the Japanese name for this cypress tree — it doesn't really have a separate English common name, which is why the Japanese word is used worldwide. One widely cited theory traces it to hi-no-ki, "fire tree," from its historical use in Shinto fire-lighting rituals. Hinoki is one of Japan's most sacred woods — it's the timber Ise Jingu, Japan's most important shrine, is ritually rebuilt from every 20 years, and it's the classic wood used for onsen bathhouses and hinoki-buro (wooden soaking tubs). Why Japanese hinoki specifically

Hinoki cypress has been grown and prized in Japan for centuries, historically used to build Shinto shrines and traditional onsen (hot spring) bathhouses for its aroma and natural durability. That same wood is the basis of "forest bathing" (shinrin-yoku), a well-documented Japanese wellness practice built around the calming effect of being near hinoki and other conifer forests. It's often confused with generic "cypress oil" — we clear that up in Hinoki Essential Oil — What It Is, and Why It's Not Just "Cypress Oil."

How this differs from other "cypress oil" on the market

  • Hinoki vs. Mediterranean cypress. Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is sometimes confused with or substituted by Cupressus sempervirens (Mediterranean cypress) — a different genus with a sharper, more resinous scent. Ours is genuine Japanese hinoki.
  • Often cut with cedarwood. Because hinoki is a specialty oil with limited supply, cheaper "hinoki-scented" products are sometimes blended with cedarwood or synthetic wood notes to stretch volume. Ours is 100% hinoki.
  • Not diluted. Ours is 100% undiluted essential oil, nothing added after distillation.

What "pure essential oil" actually means

Pure means exactly one thing: this bottle contains only steam-distilled hinoki oil — nothing else. No carrier oil, no synthetic reconstruction, no fragrance additives. Because it's a real agricultural extract, you may notice small, natural variations in scent intensity between harvests — a sign of authenticity, not inconsistency.

Ways to use it

Diffuser

3–5 drops per 100ml of water, or 20–30 drops in the Siphon Nebulizer — a forest-bathing effect for a bedroom or reading nook.

Lava Stone

Drop 3–5 drops onto lava stones for 24–48 hours of passive, electricity-free fragrance.

Inhalation

1 drop on a tissue or your palms, cup over your nose, and breathe deeply before sleep or meditation.

Topical / Bath

Dilute 2–3 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil before applying to skin. For bath, mix 5 drops with bath salts before adding to water — an onsen-inspired soak.

Frequently asked

What does the word "hinoki" mean?

It's simply the Japanese name for Chamaecyparis obtusa, a cypress tree native to Japan. There's no separate English common name, which is why the Japanese word is used internationally. It's historically one of Japan's most sacred woods, used to build shrines and traditional bathhouses.

Is hinoki the same as cypress oil?

Related but not identical — hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) and Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) are different species with distinct scent profiles. Hinoki tends to be softer and slightly lemon-tinged; Mediterranean cypress is sharper and more resinous.

What is "forest bathing" and how does this relate?

Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, is a Japanese wellness practice centred on spending time among trees like hinoki for its calming effect. Diffusing hinoki oil at home is a way to bring a similar atmosphere indoors.

Which diffuser pairs best with this oil?

For the strongest effect, use our Siphon Nebulizing Diffuser. For a gentler, ambient scent, use a Lava Stone Diffuser or a standard water diffuser.

Is this safe for pets?

Hinoki is generally considered one of the gentler essential oils, but always diffuse in a well-ventilated room and make sure pets can leave the space if the scent feels too strong. Consult a vet if you have specific concerns.

Materials + Care

Each item is close to its natural form — dried herbs, pure oils, hand-finished ceramics — so no two are perfectly identical, and that's intentional. Keep oils capped and away from direct light; store bundles and botanicals somewhere dry.
